This January, The American Express PGA Tournament returns, bringing us  together for the love of golf and a rocking good time. With world-class pros and top-notch entertainment, the week-long event makes an impressive impact on our community.

Larry Bohannan accepts the honor

But the more profound impact is the tournament’s charitable contributions presented to local nonprofits at the end of each year. During the tournament’s 67-year history, over 100 local organizations have received $67 million to assist in their efforts to serve, support and grow.

Their commitment continues year after year, with 15 local charities receiving $1.1 million in funds generated from the 2025 event. In selecting last year’s recipients, the tournament’s Impact Through Golf foundation focused on health and wellness, education, youth and family support, homelessness support, natural disaster relief and recovery and capital improvements. Beneficiaries included local Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert, CV Rescue Mission, CV Volunteers in Medicine, First Tee, Galilee Center, Pueblo Unido CDC, United Cerebral Palsy of Inland Empire, CV Boxing Club, Girlfriend Factor, Hunter Lopez Memorial Foundation, JFK/Ophelia Project and FIND Food Bank. Emergency funds were also given to the American Red Cross Southern California Region and the California Community Foundation in response to the devastating January wildfires.

In December, the tournament also honored a local celebrity, Desert Sun golf columnist Larry Bohannan, who has attended the event since 1978. After 40 years of professional coverage, 2026 will be his final year as he retires from the job he loves. In appreciation, the tournament made him the eponym for The American Express® Larry Bohannan Media Center.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed covering some of the greatest players in the world,” said Bohannan. “It’s been a lot of fun over the past 40 years, and I hope it’s another 40 years for the tournament,” especially since they have promised him a parking pass, he joked.

It is widely anticipated that this year’s field of players will be elevated due to the cancellation of The Sentry in Maui, as players may choose to start their season with The American Express. Bands to entertain include Old Dominion on Friday and pop favorites OneRepublic on Saturday.

Your participation makes these impactful contributions possible, so we hope to see you there!

The American Express takes place January 19-25 at PGA WEST and La Quinta Country Club. Tickets start at $85, and American Express cardholders receive a 20% discount on select purchases at www.theamexgolf.com.
